Sam & Anne ApplebySam and Anne Appleby have been married for 26 years. They immigrated from England to Canada soon after they were married, in 1977. With the intention of buying their own farm somewhere in Canada, Sam found a job relief milking, and Anne worked in the Municipal office in Steinbach, Manitoba. They used their experiences to aid in chosing a community and location in which they would enjoy farming. And so, they found a nice farm just south of Steinbach, which they purchased in 1979.
Sam has always been interested in the Red and White Holsteins. He grew up on a farm in England, and this is where he began his lifelong career of farming. It was the red friesian cattle that sparked his interest in the red and white bloodlines. Anne was an independent city girl when she met Sam, having grown up in a number of large UK cities. Obviously, they fell in love and Anne became a mother and farmer together with her husband. At Sardius Holsteins, we strive for longevity. Our oldest cow, and the foundation of our herd, died this summer at the ripe old age of 19. Her daughter also lived to the ripe old age of 19. Together, this mother-daughter pair have produced over 200 000 kg of milk, and their genetics can be found prominently in our herd. The farm itself has expanded quite a bit over the years. First there was the expansion to the original barn, then a calf barn was built. We built a couple of hay sheds, and some extra pens around the farm. Our most recent major building project a new barn, additional silo, and slurry store, which has allowed us to expand the farm significantly. |
